西北大地上的祁连山脚下，牧马人高青山厮守着一群马，在草原过着天地悠悠的日子。高青山养的马是为了供给采集马血的血站使用的。春天小马降生，夏天草原留下高锦与小马的美好时光。平日里老高喜欢收集各种动物的标本，他经常行走在山间，草原的角落似乎藏着各种不明原因死亡的动物尸体。老高把它们捡回来收拾干净做成标本，有时候还会贩卖给一些游客。未曾想，正是这小小的贩卖使得他一下子陷入人生的被动之地，引来了牢狱之灾。
托德·海因斯《寂静中的惊奇》将以半默片形式呈现。影片改编自同名小说，朱丽安·摩尔、米歇尔·威廉姆斯加盟。片中1927年部分的画面将以无声电影的形式呈现，还原一个真实的时代，堪称电影生涯中最有野心的作品。
